Three new scientific papers published today in Science
Today, in the journal Science, one of the world’s leading scientific journals (IF 59,921), three papers were published in which scientists from the Institute of Anthropology participated: Ph.D. Mario Novak, Ph.D. Ivor Janković, Ph.D. Petra Rajić Šikanjić and Mario Carić.

Two new scientific papers in archaeology
Two studies co-authored by the researchers from the Laboratory for Evolutionary Anthropology and Bioarchaeology of the Institute for Anthropological Research were published in the past three weeks.
The article entitled “A case of a large pedunculated-type osteochondroma from late medieval Ilok, eastern Croatia: Bioarchaeological, paleoradiological and histological study” was published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports (Q1, IF 1.668) with Mario Novak, Ivor Janković and Mario Carić participating as co-authors.

Mario Novak also participated as co-author in the study “Human talar ontogeny: Insights from morphological and trabecular changes during postnatal growth” that was published in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology (Q1, IF 2.868).

An article was published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
An article entitled “An integrative skeletal and paleogenomic analysis of stature variation suggests relatively reduced health for early European farmers” has just been published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) (IF 11,205). Mario Novak, employee of the Institute for anthropological research, also participated in this research as a co-author.

An article was published in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology (supplement to the Yearbook of Biological Anthropology) entitled “Twenty-first century bioarchaeology: Taking stock and moving forward” where Dr. Mario Novak is one of the authors.

A new paper was published in the international scientific journal Nutrients
A new paper entitled “A Generation Shift in Mediterranean Diet Adherence and Its Association with Biological Markers and Health in Dalmatia, Croatia” by Jelena Šarac, Dubravka Havaš Auguštin, Mario Lovrić, Sarah Stryeck, Iva Šunić, Natalija Novokmet and Saša Missoni was published in the international scientific journal Nutrients (IF 5,719, Q1). The paper is based on a comparison of two cohorts of respondents from Dalmatia and the connection between the Mediterranean diet and age and lipid profile and smoking of the respondents was determined. Despite the well-known positive effects of the Mediterranean diet on health, it has been observed that it is less and less consumed, especially by the young, reproductively active generation.
Successful completion of the special issue of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences (Q1, IF 5.924)
Dr. sc. Mirela Sedić, as a guest editor, completed a special issue of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences entitled “Cancer Chemoresistance: Novel Mechanical Insights and Emerging Therapeutic Strategies”, within which 12 scientific papers were published.

Published scientific paper in Nature
On Wednesday, December 22nd 2021, a palaeogenetic study entitled ‘Large-scale migration into Britain during the Middle to Late Bronze Age’ was published in Nature. Dr. Mario Novak, an employee of the Institute for Anthropological Research, is one of co-authors of this global study.

A scientific paper entitled “The Sphingosine Kinase 2 Inhibitor ABC294640 Restores the Sensitivity of BRAFV600E Mutant Colon Cancer Cells to Vemurafenib by Reducing AKT-Mediated Expression of Nucleophosmin and Translationally-Controlled Tumor Protein” was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. Mirela Sedić, PhD, one of the authors of the paper, is from the Institute for Anthropological Research. This paper is the result of scientific research conducted within the project HRZZ IP-2018-01-3900 led by M. Sedić.

Scientific paper in Nutrients journal
New paper published in Nutrients (IF5.717 (2020)) “Evaluation of the Food Choice Motives before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study of 1232 Adults from Croatia” by Ivan Dolanc, Antonija Jonjić, Eva Anđela Delale, Saša Missoni and Miran Čoklo from the Institute for anthropological research as coauthors to the research. The research was conducted as part of the international project CFC-CRO-BE (in cooperation with the Institute for Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium and the Psychiatric Hospital Ugljan, Croatia).

New paleogenetic study in PLOS ONE
On Wednesday, March 10th 2021, paleogenetic study of the victims of the Copper Age massacre from Potočani near Požega titled „Genome-wide analysis of nearly all the victims of a 6200 year old massacre“ was published in scientific journal PLOS ONE. Dr. Mario Novak and Dr. Ivor Janković from the Centre for Applied Bioanthropology of the Institute for Anthropological Research participated and co-authored the study. This study generated huge interest in Croatian and international media.
Published work based on CRIBS project in Nutrients journal
In July 2020, the international journal Nutrients (Q1, Impact factor 4,546) published a paper on the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle of pregnant women and the observed differences between the mainland and the island part of Dalmatia. The paper is based on the results of the Croatian Science Foundation’s scientific project “Cohort Study of Those Born in the Eastern Adriatic Islands (CRIBS)”, and the authors are associates from the Institute for Anthropological research (Saša Missoni, PhD; Dubravka Havaš Auguštin, PhD; Jelena Šarac,PhD; Natalija Novokmet, PhD and Nives Fuchs and colleagues from the Srebrnjak Children ‘s Hospital.

Abstract
Dogs were the first domestic animal, but little is known about their population history and to what extent it was linked to humans. We sequenced 27 ancient dog genomes and found that all dogs share a common ancestry distinct from present-day wolves, with limited gene flow from wolves since domestication but substantial dog-to-wolf gene flow. By 11,000 years ago, at least five major ancestry lineages had diversified, demonstrating a deep genetic history of dogs during the Paleolithic. Coanalysis with human genomes reveals aspects of dog population history that mirror humans, including Levant-related ancestry in Africa and early agricultural Europe. Other aspects differ, including the impacts of steppe pastoralist expansions in West and East Eurasia and a near-complete turnover of Neolithic European dog ancestry.
