McMaster University in Canada

Akacia Propst is a student that is staying at the Institute for Anthropological Research between August 2021 and February 2022 where she is conducting research as part of her doctoral dissertation at McMaster University in Canada. In the Laboratory for Evolutionary Anthropology and Bioarchaeology she studies human remains from the site of Osor – monastery of St. Peter with a special focus on the relationship between infectious diseases and diet in the mentioned population.

Erasmus +

Brina Zagorc is a student from the University of Vienna, Austria visited the Center for Applied Bioanthropology of the Institute for Anthropological Research in September 2021 with the aim of collecting samples for the purpose of ancient DNA analysis. This analysis is part of her doctoral dissertation dealing with the health of children in the Roman period and early medieval populations from Central Europe.

While Brina Zagorc was a student at Univerza v Ljubljani she spent her time here from September 3rd till November 30th 2018. with Erasmus + Program. Her mentor was Mario Novak, PhD.

Simon Fraser University, Canada

During August 2021, Valentina Martinoia visited the Laboratory for Evolutionary Anthropology and Bioarchaeology where she collected bone and teeth samples from several archaeological sites in Croatia. In her doctoral dissertation, conducted at Simon Fraser University, Canada, she focuses on the reconstruction of non-adult diet in prehistoric populations through the analysis of carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes.

Valentina stayed at the Institute a year earlier in the period 2.3.-2.9.2020. while studying at the University of Bologna.

University of California, Riverside, USA

In July and August 2021, the Laboratory for Evolutionary Anthropology and Bioarchaeology hosted Amaretta Azevedo from the University of California, Riverside, USA. She conducted research at the Institute as part of her doctoral dissertation dealing with the reconstruction of living conditions, health and nutrition of the Roman period population of Zadar based on conventional bioarchaeology and stable isotopes analysis.

Amaretta spent a year earlier at the Institute in the period 14.9.-16.10.2020.

Panteion University, Athens

Anastasios Gkikas is a student of anthropology from Greece (Panteion University, Athens) stayed at the Institute of Anthropology as part of the Erasmus + program from December 7, 2020 to June 9, 2021. Two Erasmus programs: the first in the period from December 7, 2020 to 5 March 3, 2021 and other from March 10 to June 9, 2021. As an intern, he volunteered on the project of the Croatian Science Foundation “Solidarity Economy in Croatia: Anthropological Perspective”, which is being implemented at the Institute of Anthropology under the leadership of Olga Orlić. PhD. As part of his work, he translated from Greek the introductory chapter from the book on solidarity economy, read and wrote a review of the newly acquired book for the project (Social and Solidarity-Based Economy and Territory: From Embeddedness to Co-construction “, Xabier Itcaina and Nadine Richez-Battesti (eds): Social Economy and Public Economy.PIE PETER LANG SA, Brussels, Belgium). He also participated in field research in Zagreb. He participated in the Invisible Zagreb tourist tour with a former homeless man and interviewed, with the help of an intermediary (due to the language barrier by the respondents), the leader of the mentioned tourist tour, also the founder of the Fighter Association Milo Mrvalja. More field research was planned, but this was impossible due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prof. James C. Ahern, accompanied by four students from UW, University of Wyoming, USA was in the period from 13.1. to 23.1.2020. a guest at the Institute for Anthropological research.

Loughborough University

Stasia Ilić is a student from Loughborough University, UK. She spent her internship in the period form October 1st 2018 till September 27th 2019. She worked on materials collected on CRIBS project guided by her mentor Jelena Šarac, PhD.

University of Central Florida

Prof. J. Marla Toyne form University of Central Florida, USA, spent part of her sabbatical on Institute for anthropological research in the period from November 6th 2018 till May 14th 2019.

University in Bologna

Carla Figus from University in Bologna, Italy worked et the Institute for anthropological research from March 11th till March 16th 2019 on MikroCT skening of ankle and heel bones of children for her doctoral thesis and as a part of the PASTLIVES project (project leader Mario Novak, PhD)

Erasmus+

Sofia Poulia from National Capodistrian University, Athens, Greece spent her time at the Institute for anthropological research from March 18th till June 18th 2019. She was an Erasmus+ Programme intern on research project on Greeks in Croatia with the focus on performance of national identity. (mentor Morana Jarec)

University of Edinburgh

Linda Fibiger from University of Edinburgh, UK spent time at the Institute for anthropological research couple of times during 2019. ( 13.-15. 5., 27. 9 .- 4. 10. 2019.) She is an associate on ERC project The Fall of 1200BC: The role of migration and conflict in social crises at end of the Bronze Age in South-eastern Europe. Mario Novak, PhD, as her associate on ERC project, was guiding the sample analisys in our laboratories.

Wennner-Gren & COST

Ali Metin Büyükkarakaya from Hacettepe University, Turky, spent time at the Institute for anthropological research from July 1st-5th 2019. Collection of samples of mummy bones and other for anlisys and help with paperwork Wennner-Gren and COST. (mentor Mario Novak, PhD)

 Study Abroad

Prof. James Ahern from University of Wyoming, USA spent his time on field work in Istria with prof. Janković in period of July 25th till August 2nd and on Institute for anthropological research October 9th 2019. They also planned Study Abroad programm for Januray 2020.

Eastern Oregon University

Prof. Rory Becker form Eastern Oregon University, USA spent his time from July 25th till August 2nd 2019 on Field work in Istria with prof. Janković.

Universidad de Cantabria

Prof. Ana Belen Marin Arroyo and Lucia Agudo from Universidad de Cantabria, Spain, spent her time at the Institute for anthropological research during august 2019 (7th till 9th) Prof. Ana Belen Marin Arroyo is a leader of ERC project  Subsistence and human resilience to sudden climatic events in Europe during MIS3 and prof. Janković associate on the project.

University of California Santa Barbara

Sarah McClure from University of California Santa Barbara, USA came to Institute for anthropological research during Semptember 2019 (12th & 13th). She worked on HRZZ project PASTLIVES (project leader Mario Novak, PhD)

Université de Franche-Comté

Prof. Morana Čaušević-Bully from Université de Franche-Comté, France did her research at the Institute for anthropological research during October 2019 (28th & 29th) She is a leader of  IATEKA project ‒ Interdisciplinary approach to the territorial evolution of the Kvarner archipelago (Croatia), Mario Novak, PhD is her associate on the project.

Universidad de Chile

Josefa Antonia Guerra Spencer from Universidad de Chile (Department of Anthropology)  was at the Institute for anthropological research from december 21st 2017. till February 14th 2018. Durig internship she was mentored by Natalija Novokmet, PhD.

Utrecht University

24 biology students from Utrecht’s Biology Association at the Utrecht University Netherlands visited Institute for anthropological research on July 17th 20118.

Independent researcher

Nadia Nizetich from California with a major in anthropology and a minor in Slavic studies spent couple of months working at the Institute for anthropological research in the period from September 1st till Novemner 30th 2018 (mentor Olga Orlić, PhD)

MScN Internship

Zrinka Glavaš from National University of Natural Medicine spent her time at the Institute for anthropological research  from April 24th till May 5th 2017 as MScN Intern. She worked on National Institute of Health project.

Anna Nikolova from American University in Bulgaria was at the Institute for anthropological rsearch from May 15th till August 30th 20167 as a student from Erasmus+ Traineeship programm. She was mentored by Olga Orlić, PhD.
