As summer slowly turns into autumn, bustle returns to the city. When in a hurry, we rarely pause to wonder about the history of the places we pass every day.
Cvjetni trg is known today for its cafés and flower stalls. There were once gardens, orchards and fields here. For centuries, this area has been defined by a church. The Church of St. Margaret stood here from the 14th century. It was surrounded on three sides by a cemetery for residents who lived outside the city walls. To the east, the cemetery reached what is now the Oktogon passage, where human skeletal remains were found during the construction of a bank building in the late 19th century.
Today, the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord stands on the square. It was built after St. Margaret’s Church was demolished.
