This year’s excavation campaign at the Lipanovac – Pustošina (Grgurevo) archaeological site in the Rešetari Municipality has yielded exceptional results. An additional 64 graves were discovered, bringing the total number of investigated burial units (dating from the 14th to the 18th century) to an impressive 216 graves!
The biggest surprise this year is the discovery of graves intersected by the very foundations of the medieval church, as well as the remains of an older structure with traces of brick. This suggests that this area was functional even before the construction of the church, with traces potentially dating all the way back to antiquity.
The research is being conducted in cooperation with the Archaeological Heritage Service of the Croatian Conservation Institute, the Nova Gradiška City Museum, and the Institute for Anthropological Research in Zagreb, as well as through fieldwork practice for students from the Department of Archaeology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb.
