In collaboration with the Barać Caves Public Institution and SPELEON Centre for subterranean heritage this year’s research of the Upper Barać Cave has been announced. The research will be conducted by Institute scientists in partnership with international collaborators. The work is part of the ERC Synergy project Last Neanderthals (Principal Investigators: Stefano Benazzi, University of Bologna; Francesco Berna, University of Siena; Omry Barzilai, University of Haifa).

The aim of the project is to gain deeper insight into the behavior, evolution, and other aspects of the life and population structure of late Neanderthals across the broader Eurasian region. The research lead for Croatia is Dr. Ivor Janković, and the project also involves Dr. Lia Vidas from the Institute for Anthropological Research in Zagreb, in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Zadar (Prof. Dario Vujević and Dr. Mario Bodružić).
