Do you want to delve into the lives of ancient people across the Roman Empire? Discover the stories told by their skeletons, plant remains, grave goods and more. Look no further than ICORB 2025! The International Congress on Roman Bioarchaeology (ICORB) and the Institute of Anthropology from Zagreb will hold the 4th International Scientific Conference at the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb from August 31 to September 2, 2025. The annual conference provides an opportunity for researchers from around the world to share their research, which includes analyses of Roman-era archaeobotanical, zooarchaeological and human remains, as well as funerary practices and rituals. The conference emphasizes interdisciplinary dialogue, combining traditional archaeological methods with new theoretical frameworks and ultimately encourages scholars to ask new questions and push methodological boundaries. Presentations and posters at this scientific conference not only present results; they become springboards for discussion and reinterpretation, and scholars offer real-time feedback on research and theoretical developments.
Whether you are fascinated by ancient food, disease, migration or marginalized voices within the Roman world, our speakers will share the latest discoveries and insights that are changing the way we understand the Roman past. Don’t miss the opportunity to connect, learn and be inspired.”
The conference itself is expected to feature around 100 speakers from around the world (approximately 20 countries, from Georgia and Turkey to Egypt and Spain, from Norway and the UK to the USA and Canada, including a number of experts from Croatia and surrounding countries). The presentations are divided into oral and poster presentations, and the participants themselves will participate in person and virtually. The conference will feature a number of world-renowned speakers in this field, and the invited speaker is Dr. Anna J. Osterholtz from Mississippi State University in the USA.
In addition to the lectures, there will be a roundtable discussion on ethics in the research of human remains from archaeological contexts and their presentation in museums, which is a very current topic. In addition to the formal part of the conference, an informal part is also planned, consisting of a reception at the opening of the conference, which will be held in the lapidary of the Archaeological Museum, as well as a final reception/party, which will be held in the Pri Nami club. Before the official start of the conference, informal socializing and a tour through the city center for participants are planned, and on the last day of the conference, an organized bus trip to Šćitarjevo (Roman Andautonia) is planned, where colleagues from the Archaeological Museum will organize a tour of the site and a tasting of Roman food and drinks.
