A Walk Through the Cemeteries of Old Zagreb is a series of stories about places that preserve the memory of forgotten cemeteries.
Today, on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, the first walk is dedicated to St. Peter’s Cemetery. The history of the cemetery is connected with the historic settlement of Laška Ves, which was located in the area of today’s Vlaška Street. The cemetery changed location several times, and in the 19th century it was relocated to the area behind St. Peter’s Church, where the Women’s Health Clinic Petrova stands today. Next to the Catholic cemetery was a Jewish one. Today, the only witness is the Chapel of St. John the Baptist in the hospital park. A few years after Mirogoj opened, both cemeteries were closed. The cemetery was the final resting place of August Šenoa’s family members and the writer Dragutin Rakovac.
